棲處：

在自然環境下，如沙漠、熱帶地區的土壤和水、溫泉等高溫的環境下都可以找到；在牛奶、罐頭、甜菜、乾燥的食物，Bacillus stearothermophilus也可以生長；而在北極的土壤和水中、深海海底的某處，找到了Bacillus stearothermophilus 的孢子，其被斷定為具有上千年歷史的孢子。

Bacillus stearothermophilus屬於GroupⅡ的菌。在Bacillus的菌種裡，一孢子的型態分為三種類型：

（1） GroupⅠ 內孢子呈卵型，不會造成細菌細胞腫大。
（2） GroupⅡ 內孢子呈卵型，會造成細菌細胞腫大。
（3） GroupⅢ 內孢子呈圓型。

Bacillus stearothermophilus在罐頭食物中醱酵，由於產酸不產氣，使罐頭外表不會產生變形，一定要打開罐頭才能確定。此種腐壞稱為「平酸性腐敗」

Bacillus stearothermophilus是滅菌指標菌，滅菌完全是以能將其殺死為標準。
